Anyone who has driven by the Cape Girardeau Public Library on Clark Avenue has seen the shape of things to come. The old library building has been replaced by a much larger structure that, when completed early next year, will offer library users dozens of options.

Several interested community residents recently toured the construction site and listened as library director Betty Martin explained the plans for the new building and answered questions. Those who took the tour said they came away impressed with the vision for a modern, technology-equipped facility that will give users access to digital databases and the Internet as well as books and periodicals.

In addition to the extra 21,000 square feet the library will have, there will be more parking and easier access for the handicapped. A drive-through window will be another new convenience. Self-serve checkout is planned once the new library is operating.

Library patrons have been making good use of the temporary library across town, and they are sure to like all the amenities and convenience of the new library when it opens.
