To the editor:
Ever since the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, people have found ways to become distracted while driving. Whether it's personal grooming, drinking a beverage or operating a radio, drivers all too often take their attention from the road. All of these activities can cause dangerous situations.
For the past several months, public opinion across the country has focused on one particular activity: using wireless phones. The majority of drivers proceed with caution when calling from their cars. But with more than 100 million Americans using wireless phones, it is not difficult to find people struggling to drive and use hand-held phones.
Verizon Wireless supports proposed legislation in Missouri, House Bill 670, that calls for the use of hands-free wireless phone devices while driving. This legislation takes a rational, commonsense approach for a number of reasons. First, earpieces allow drivers to use their phones while keeping both hands on the wheel. Second, this legislation would ensure we are not left with a patchwork of municipal or county ordinances. Third, the law would supersede conflicting local ordinances. Fourth, this legislation wisely exempts emergency calls. Finally, it calls for a three-year phase-in period.
We in the wireless world must play our part. We need to supply drivers with headsets or voice-activation devices at an affordable price. We must also intensify educating our customers on driving safety.
We encourage Missouri lawmakers to pass HB 670. It will make our communities a safer place to live.
