To the editor:
In 1997, several Cape Girardeau community leaders began working on an initiative to develop a comprehensive approach to address services to victims of violent crime and sexual assault. The result has been the Southeast Missouri Network Against Sexual Violence.
I would be somewhat remiss if I did not point out the invaluable assistance provided by St. Francis Medical Center in spearheading this significant community initiative. Not only did St. Francis Medical Center provide meeting facilities, equipment, resources and manpower, but it was the first institution to stop into a leadership role and provide funding to ensure the continuation of the NASV. As a result of the insight and community spirit of the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation board, we have now been able to obtain additional grants and funding which will directly benefit the children and families of Cape Girardeau and Southeast Missouri.
I would also like to extend my appreciation to the Southeast Missourian for its assistance in informing our community about this important resource. Although we often find it difficult to discuss the tragedies of violent crime, it is both necessary and important for community agencies to step up to the plate to deal with these significant issues. On behalf of the Cape Girardeau Police Department, I salute those who have worked in partnership to create the NASV.
