To the editor: Sunday was National Pet Memorial Day. Humane societies and animal lovers mourned the loss of millions of innocent lives as a result of pet overpopulation. The number of animals born in our country per year far exceeds the number of humans born. It is difficult for people to hear about the euthanasia of healthy, innocent animals. That is exactly why it's so difficult: because they are healthy and innocent. They are born so they can die...

Sunday was National Pet Memorial Day. Humane societies and animal lovers mourned the loss of millions of innocent lives as a result of pet overpopulation. The number of animals born in our country per year far exceeds the number of humans born. It is difficult for people to hear about the euthanasia of healthy, innocent animals. That is exactly why it's so difficult: because they are healthy and innocent. They are born so they can die.

Please take the time to have your pet spayed or neutered. Do this in memory of the millions of puppies and kittens born who will not be so lucky as to have a home as your own pets are.
