To the editor:
The campaign commercials of U.S. Sen. Christopher Bond are clearly trying hard to convince us that the senator stands for all that is reasonable. What they don't tell us as they try to create the apple-pie-and-motherhood image is that Bond has one of the poorest records in Washington when it comes to protecting human and environmental health. It is for this reason that Bond has received harsh criticism from organizations such as the Sierra Club.
It is ironic (if not downright deceptive) that Bond should then select as his campaign tag line a slogan long designated by and a trademark of the Sierra Club. Despite his track record, apparently, Bond desperately wants to be considered as enlightened as is the Sierra Club on important issues dealing with our families and our future.
Since he has not sought, nor would he receive, the endorsement of the Sierra Club without a serious about-face on most of his relevant policies regarding human and environmental health, he should desist from theft of the Sierra Club slogan, "For Our Families, For Our Future" and halt his attempts to pretend he possesses, displays or endorses Sierra Club values.
Bond has been accused of "greenwashing" the electorate before in his attempts to pretend he is environmentally sensitive when he is not. This slogan theft is a clear demonstration of exactly the greenwashing of which he has been accused.
