It's a beautiful Saturday morning. I am sitting on the weathered wooden planks of my back porch. The cool morning breeze is a gentle reminder that the fall season is near.

As I look forward to the east, I observe the rising of that lucky old sun. It has hearkened the call of a rooster who is crowing somewhere nearby. As the red brilliance of the sun rises over the muddy brown waters of the Mississippi, I hear the sound of a train rushing down the rails which run parallel with the river front. The clanging sound of the train wheels and its whistle blowing at each crossing, brings back memories of my grandfather who was once a conductor on such a train.

As I look towards the west, I see three birds perched on top of a utility pole, singing their praises to the Lord, I suppose. It must be eight o'clock as the bells of St. Mary's are ringing. How faithful are these bells each morning.

The church, which is in full view as I look towards the south, is one of the great landmarks in my neighborhood. It has been a historic symbol which has brought back many memories of my past back to life, as has the funeral home which is in the path between the church and my house. The funeral home is now a daily remember that life on this earth is but temporal, and the church is a daily reminder that for those who trust in God, life is eternal.
