To the editor: Privatizing the U.S. Postal Service is another dumb idea. It's another of the dumb ideas emanating from the Big Lie foisted on the American psyche that private industry can do anything better than the government. It makes me wonder if America would be electrified to this day if left to private industry...

Privatizing the U.S. Postal Service is another dumb idea. It's another of the dumb ideas emanating from the Big Lie foisted on the American psyche that private industry can do anything better than the government. It makes me wonder if America would be electrified to this day if left to private industry.

The Postal Service is a public service rather than a business. To give the full spectrum of mail delivery to every sector of American society entails some more profitable services supporting necessary services that are less profitable. The private carriers have skimmed the cream of message and parcel delivery, while the Postal Service delivers any and all mail to any location.

Private industry may have its triumphs, but is has its serious foible as well. Government does some things better and in the public interest. The Postal Service is one of these.
