To the editor:
Reference has been made to the "political unknowns" who remain on the Republican ballot for the 8th Congressional District after the death of Bill Emerson.
I am reminded of a similar situation which occurred years ago when I lived in Louisiana. An unknown named Bob Livingston was unexpectedly elected after the indictment of his incumbent opponent during the campaign. Now Rep. Livingston is a well-respected major player in the Republican revolution.
There is something to be said for political unknowns. Given the mess in Washington, D.C., perhaps it would be refreshing for us to have the benefit of the thinking of a citizen-representative rather than a career politician.
I hope you will put forth a special effort to help your readers to get to know the two remaining Republican candidates. As for Earl Durnell, I can tell you that he is a man of strong moral fiber and an advocate of limited government and individual responsibility. He is well-respected by those of us in the Cabool area who see out-of-touch, bloated, imperial government as the central problem in present-day American political and economic life.
