To the editor:

I am writing in reference to the article, "Couples withdraw from road lawsuit," in the March 10 edition of your newspaper.

We were quite appalled to have the name of our husband and father, who is recently deceased, mentioned in the article.

Charles F. Eifert was a well-liked, kind and respected man in the Shawneetown community. We are very upset by the context in which his name was used in the article, and we feel facts need to be straightened out concerning this issue.

His name was used without his permission or knowledge to get people to sign the petition that was being passed around concerning Country Road 507 and County Road 514. People were led to believe under false pretenses that he wanted the roads reopened. Therefore, surrounding neighbors signed the petition thinking they were helping him. When he found this out after several in the community had signed the petition, he called and told Mr. Schmidt not be using his name and saying things he did not say.

Three families of Eiferts live on County Roar 514 and are directly affected by the decisions, and none of us were ever approached, and none of us signed the petition. Our feelings on the issues were spoken at the hearing on Nov. 10.

We all, as he did, want County Road 507 and Country Road 514 to remain closed, and in no way was he responsible for getting anyone involved in any lawsuit, as the article has led people to believe.

A lot of his friends and family concerned with this have said his name being used in the article wasn't right because he isn't here to defend himself. We are sorry, but he is still here. He has his wife, three children and six grandchildren. He is very much alive, and we will not put up with his name being used in anything he had absolutely nothing to do with.

This whole county road issues has had so many wrong facts printed. But, as the saying goes, when a person tells one lie, he is sure to have to tell another.
