To the editor:
I would like to respond to the recent letter about GATT. It seems common sense doesn't tell everyone the same thing. It appears to me every time we lower trade tariffs we lose more jobs to Japan, Korea, Taiwan, China and Mexico.
General Motors just recently announced its is building three new plants in Mexico next year. GM has spent the past 10 years downsizing and closing plants to become more efficient. The automaker has lost of a lot of good jobs in this country. It knew NAFTA and GATT were coming. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Industries have to build the best product at the least possible cost. What is the greatest cost? Labor. Where is the cheapest labor? Mexico, Taiwan, China and Korea.
History and my common sense says there will be more industries like the garment, show, auto and electronics industries moving to Mexico. I don't see this as a good deal for the people of this country.
