To the editor:
Rosalie Bollinger stated in her recent letter that if we wereincorrect, she would like to be enlightened. I hope I will be able to do that.
The Kelly School District's boundaries are the same now as they were in the 1950s. We have students with Benton, Sikeston and Charleston addresses, but these students reside in rural areas in the district.
If we are able to afford homes and property that are assessed at high values, we should be able to afford the taxes on that property. I paid $633.41 in school taxes in 2000. If the bond issue had passed, I would have had to pay $785.22, an increase of $151.81, or 42 cents a day. This would not have doubled my taxes.
Mobile classrooms have been an issue to some patrons. These classrooms are nice to look at. They are clean and bright and have all the trimmings of a regular classroom. However, they are not regular classrooms. Mobile units are trailers made for homes where families can live comfortably. They were not made to withstand the use of nearly 100 students a day.
If you come to the meetings, you will hear concerns of others. You will hear those concerns addressed with correct information. As a more informed patron, you will be able to help get the word out to properly inform others so they too might be enlightened.
