To the editor: The editorial about the cement plant in Ste. Genevieve takes the position that nobody wants to pollute the Mississippi River more than it already is and then takes the position that Holnam Inc. should be allowed to operate because of its economic impact. Aren't the two positions inconsistent?...

The editorial about the cement plant in Ste. Genevieve takes the position that nobody wants to pollute the Mississippi River more than it already is and then takes the position that Holnam Inc. should be allowed to operate because of its economic impact. Aren't the two positions inconsistent?

The editorial ignores the track record of this company and then suggests the company should be fined and ultimately closed if it fails to comply with regulations. Fines do not compensate for declines in the quality of the air, pollutants in our water or any resulting illnesses. Going ahead with a project without protection for people is irresponsible. One wonders who would benefit.
