After having had the opportunity to voice our concerns to the city council regarding the proposed plans for government-subsidized rental housing at the corner of Sprigg and Bertling streets, Councilman Richard Eggimann allowed himself the opportunity to address us. In so doing, Eggimann indicated an unwillingness to allow us a response to his allegations. Therefore, we feel compelled to respond by way of this medium.

Eggimann professes to not being a politician and infers offense to any reference to such. Yet he proceeded to use his position as a soapbox to allege that we were derogatory of Washington School and further insinuated that our actions were motivated by a desire to insulate ourselves from lower-income families. Such is flat-out false and misleading.

The record of the city council proceedings of Sept. 18 speaks for itself. We challenge Eggimann to cite any representation made by any of us which could in any way be interpreted as derogatory of Washington School or lower-income families. In fact, we comprise a neighborhood that has chosen to live in the Washington School district and are proud of the school's excellent administration and teachers. We find his allegations most offensive and question his motivation. His comments can only serve to enhance ill will where none existed prior to his diatribe.
