To the editor:

I would like to thank Claire Ellinghouse, the Southeast Missourian and the many people who have given donations toward congenital heart research. My 19-year-old son has been given the opportunity to a second chance at life because of funding for research and early detection.

The late Dr. James Kinder diagnosed Trent Miller with aortic stenosis at birth. At the age of 13, he had a Ross procedure, which replaced his valve with a cadaver's aortic valve. Now the only medical need is prior to dental treatment. Trent has played sports, camped and had orthodontic treatment. He is a freshman at Westminster College.

My intent for this letter is to inform the public that one only needs to look within your community for individuals who have benefited and others who are waiting for congenital heart research to give their loved ones a second chance at life. Your donations are giving the most precious gift: life.
