To the editor:

We have just returned from a very nice short concert in Academic Hall's auditorium at Southeast Missouri State University. This recital-type concert was presented to begin a scholarship fund for SEMO music students in memory of Betty Sue Palsgrove, a 35-year teacher in the music department. Susie was a members and supporter of Sigma Alpha Iota, the women's music society which organized this concert. We applaud the time and effort spent by the girls to present this concert and reception.

We also appreciate the efforts the faculty members made to find time not only for the concert, but to get together to practice. Dr. John Shelton and Beverly Reece, duo pianists, must have spent hours perfecting their two classical numbers. Dr. Elizabeth James-Gallagher, fine soprano and voice teacher, was accompanied by Dr. Shelton -- more hours.

The students -- Tyson Zahner, baritone; Christopher D. Lair, bass tubist, accompanied by Sharla Marshall; Jamie Becker, soprano; and Matt Yount, pianist -- all performed admirably and show much promise. Outstanding were Tyson Zahner and his accompanist, Diana Weaver, as well as Matt Yount. Tim DePriest is always a fine accompanist.

Plans are for this type of concert to be annual increase the scholarship fund in memory of Susie.

Few people know that in order to give scholarships from a particular funds, it must have reached $10,000 so that the recipients receive money from the dividends. Of course, contributions can be made at any time.

Since the concert was so sparsely attended, it is our suggestions that information get to the public much sooner next year, that is be in the Missourian's calendar and SEMO's music department calendar, and that a sizable mailing be made from a music list, now in existence, to inform music lovers and supporters.

Some of us oldsters who loved Susie would be glad to help.
