To the editor:
Since the first of August, a large group of Central High School students has been working almost daily to become the best they can be. They are learning about goal-setting, teamwork, determination and the value of hard work. While they are learning these valuable lessons, they are forming lifelong friendships and having fun. The group I'm referring to is the Marching Tiger Band.
The results of their hours and hours of practice are evident when you watch and hear them. They have become one of the finest marching bands in the state. Many people are unaware that there is a competitive season for high school marching bands. The Tigers participate in five contests around the state in October and November. As of the printing of this letter, they already have performed and been judged on three of these events. Competing against a total of 66 other bands, the tigers have been rewarded for their efforts by capturing one third-place and two first-place trophies.
As with so many things, we sometimes don't know just how good we have something until we travel somewhere else. Many people only get to see our band during a halftime performance and never see any other bands perform. Those that are able to see, hear and compare realize what a credit these young people are to their parents, band directors, school and community.
I highly encourage anyone who has an interest in music, students or competition to try to make it to Busch Stadium on Saturday Oct. 22, to watch these dedicated students. The contest will feature 48 marching bands split into four size-divisions. It begins at 10 in the morning and ends at 9:45 that evening. Those who attend may come and go as they wish. Cape Central will perform at 8:45 p.m. The students would appreciate our support and encouragement. Tickets are available at the stadium.
