I understand that U.S. senators are debating a constitutional amendment to make flag burning a crime. I ask you to vote no.

My father fought in World War II, and he fought for liberty and freedom. He always taught me to respect and honor the American flag, but along with that right came responsibility and the right to dissent.

He fought for freedom of speech, and even though he would not approve of flag burning, he would have died for your right to express your opinions.

The rights and responsibilities of Americans do not have to be mandated by laws. We are free-thinking, decision-making people.

Senators, do not follow in the footsteps of Fidel Casto, Saddam Hussein and Mao Tse-tung who initiated laws that make it a crime to burn their national flags. Allow Americans to be Americans. Be tolerant of dissent. Watch your actions so that Americans will not be forced to burn their flags out of disgust for their leaders.
