To the editor:
Mary Johnson Tweedy, a generous benefactor to Southeast Missouri State University, passed away last weekend in New York. Her generosity has not only touched the lives of her friends and acquaintances on this campus, but through her establishments of the Johnson Faculty Center, B.F. Johnson Hall, Carrier Woodburn Johnson Library Endowment and the Mary Johnson Tweedy Fund she will continue to positively affect for many generations the lives of students here. The students and campus were much loved by her.
I am sad to report, however, that someone has uprooted a weeping spruce tree (one of a rare, matching pair) from the Welcome Fountain and flower garden seating area at the corner of Pacific Street and Alta Vista. This tree was also donated by Mrs. Tweedy.
If someone reading this has taken it to be used as a Christmas tree, please return it. It is a sad tribute to think someone could steal a tree from this garden at any time, but especially at this time.
