To the editor:During a recent speech in Sedalia, Lt. Gov. Peter Kinder compared Democrats to "dumb animals that forget nothing and learn nothing." It is amazing and tragic that a statewide official would attack an entire block of Missourians and refer to them as nothing more than "dumb animals." The next day Kinder apologized for his "strongly partisan remark" and stated his eagerness in working with Democrats, Republicans and Independents alike. Unfortunately, he has shown his true partisan colors.

Recently, after my daughters taunted and brutally teased each other as only young siblings can do, I had to explain to my 5- and 3-year-olds that words mean something and they have an impact. While the apology is appreciated, Kinder has breached the trust we put in public officials to do and say what is in the best interest of the state. Kinder's words do mean something and have an impact.

Kinder's statement is indicative of the partisan and mean-spirited atmosphere in Jefferson City that is continually fostered by those in leadership, such as the lieutenant governor.

If Kinder is going to show his true colors, let it be on issues such as stem-cell research. Wouldn't it be nice for Missourians to know where he stands on such an important issue? For the sake of the state, I wish Kinder would focus on policy and issues that move Missouri forward and leave his childish rants to himself.
