Since 1985 the St. Louis Cardinals have won four National League pennants and two World Series championships. The Redbirds have advanced to the postseason many other times.
Cardinals fans expect their team to make the playoffs year after year. It's a culture of winning baseball, playing the game the right way, and providing the best fans in baseball with the best baseball contests.
The 2014 Cardinals spent most of the year outside first place. It was not until late in the season when the team led the division. But they did, and tonight the team will play Game 1 of the National League Division Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The starting pitchers: Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals and Clayton Kershaw for the Dodgers.
The Cards are the reigning National League champions, but LA is the favorite to win the series. What does this mean? Not much. Any team can win any game in baseball, and the Cardinals have thrived as the underdog.
Our friends in Kansas City also have a team to root for in October. For the first time since the 1985 World Series, which was against the Cardinals, the Royals are playing postseason baseball. Kansas City won an epic contest over Oakland on Tuesday evening. Losing 7-3 in the 6th inning, Kansas City came back two times to win the game in the bottom of the 12th inning.
It's possible the Royals and Cardinals could meet again this month. A Fall Classic with both Missouri baseball teams would be memorable and exciting. Think about this: The base-stealing Royals against the game's best defensive catcher in Yadier Molina. Two small-market clubs. Two gritty teams with little flash but several hard-nosed players who never quit.
We wish the Royals and the Cardinals all the best as they face the Angels and Dodgers in the respective divisional series.
