Generally speaking, most news organizations tend to shy away from all by the most general reporting on religious matters, particularly those that go to the heart of a personal relationship with the Almighty. Fortunately, there are some signs of change, particularly in popular television programming that incorporates bedrock religious themes in a positive way.
For some time, the Southeast Missourian has stood out among other newspapers in various state, regional and national journalism contests because of the attention it devotes to religious subject matter in news articles, editorials, columns and letters to the editor.
One major effort has been a quarterly publication, included as part of the newspaper, called "In the Spirit." This was the brainchild of the Southeast Missourian's advertising director, Pat Zellmer, who also collects and writes the inspirational messages of hope and joy that fill each issue.
Before Christmas and Easter each year, "In the Spirit" finds ordinary people whose lives are anything but ordinary, thanks to a profound belief in and reliance on the power and mercy of God. We hope this special section finds a meaningful place in your reading throughout the year.
