For all the work it does with animals in this area, the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri relies mostly on fund-raising events to provide the money it needs throughout the year to operate its shelter in Cape Girardeau. Two of the society's major fund raisers are in the works, and your continuing support will be greatly appreciated.

One of the events is the 17th annual auction, which will begin at 5 p.m. with a silent auction and dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Jackson. The oral auction will follow at 7 p.m.

The other event is the "Paws to Recycle" collection of aluminum cans for the Humane Society. This is a part of a national effort, and the local society will be competing for national prizes as well as earnings from the sale of aluminum cans locally.

Aluminum cans may be taken to Sides Metal Recycling, 80 N. Broadview in Cape Girardeau. Be sure to specify that the money for the cans you contribute be sent to the shelter at 2536 Boutin Road in Cape Girardeau.

The can drive is earmarked for supplies needed to care for animals at the shelter: bleach, laundry detergent, hoses, hose nozzles, drugs, pet foods and treats.

The Humane Society has many supporters, but those who volunteer their time and those who generously provide financial support -- or both. Your support during the annual auction and the aluminum can drive will help the society continue its fine work.
