When the Southeast Missourian's managing editor, Joni Adams, heard about Random Acts of Kindness and Senseless Beauty, she was struck by its simplicity and its potential. Soon she learned that several newspapers across the country had sponsored Random Acts of Kindness Week, and she quickly won this newspaper's endorsement to promote such a week here.
Response to the announcement that the first-ever Random Acts of Kindness Week in the Cape Girardeau area would start on Mother's Day has been overwhelming. Businesses, organizations, churches, schools -- even individuals and families -- have signed up to participate.
Why? There are probably as many reasons as there are participants. But the eagerness to be involved in acts of kindness is a good indication that most folks are good-hearted and interested in the welfare of their neighbors, friends and customers.
The most appealing thing could be that there is no profit motive involved. This newspaper isn't selling any kindness ads. Participating businesses aren't having any kindness sales. The hundreds of individuals who will find their own ways to participate are doing it just because ... it feels good ... it is positive ... it helps others ... it unites a diverse community in small acts of humanity.
Whatever the reason, it promises to be a great week.
