Shannon and Amy Aldridge are an inspiration. The couple lost their daughter Sahara in 2007 to brain cancer. But the Aldridges have been dedicated to helping others and, in effect, honoring their daughter.
The annual Hoops for Life charity 5k set for Saturday is named after Sahara, whose nickname was "Hoops."
The event has grown over the years and included, at times, a concert. Shannon Aldridge said the goal this year is geared toward reaching a large number of participants. They hope to see 700 people sign up, and earlier this week, according to a story by Southeast Missourian reporter Tyler Graef, they were well on their way to approaching this number with 644 registered on Tuesday morning.
Along with the 5k there will be a 1.6-mile power walk. Those interested can walk in the name of a loved one.
"It doesn't matter who you are. Everyone's been touched by cancer in some way or another," Shannon Aldridge said. "We want to encourage people to get off the couch and get involved."
The walk begins at 8 a.m. Saturday. You can register the day of the event from 6 to 7: 45 a.m. The registration fee is $30.
This will be a special run and walk. We encourage you to consider participation. And thank you to Shannon and Amy Aldridge for their efforts to honor Sahara and help others.
