Grandson, 13, keeps family calm during tornado

My daughter and grandchildren live in Jackson. I received word Tuesday night that their apartment building had been in the direct path of the tornado. I immediately called and discovered they were all OK, with the exception of the family vehicle.

But the thing that stood out the most for me was the bravery of my 13-year-old grandson, John Linton. In the face of what could have been a devastating event, he kept his cool and got my daughter and her two young daughters to an inner room and made them stay until it was over, all the time offering words of encouragement.

This may not seem like such a big thing, but to me it is. My daughter is terrified of storms. Just getting her to be calm enough to take shelter was a major accomplishment, but to be able to talk her through it was nothing short of a miracle. I would like to recognize his bravery and let him know how proud I am of him. It is very comforting to know that this brave child is there to protect and care for my girls.
