To the editor:
I'm not a Republican. The Republican Party is in a downward spiral following the path of the Democrats. Power corrupts, and the Republicans have blown it. This new Republican vote-starved ideology has abandoned most conservatives.
The GOP has failed to secure our borders. I spent a year in Afghanistan to come home and learn that after all the good I saw being done there, we are still losing our war on terror here at home. From my experience, we do a better job of securing Afghanistan's borders than we do our own.
It will take years of self-evaluation and policy correction before another Republican can rightfully criticize the Democrats for outrageous spending of our tax dollars. The Bush tax cuts were a great start, generating more revenue than anyone would have thought possible, but the Republicans have abandoned that path to continue the spending that is draining our wallets.
Republicans can no longer hammer Democrats for overlooking the importance of securing our borders. If the Democrats had sense, they would get serious about defending American security interests here and abroad. They would find a true war hero to run in 2008 and get serious about real tax reform and real pork cuts with a meaningful legislative policy for the line-item veto.
I'm a disappointed conservative. I hope Democrats might pick up the ball the Republicans have dropped. We are still stuck with rotten choices and an onward drudge into one-party status.
