Generosity is a tradition in the Cape Girardeau area. That tradition was upheld when postal patrons recently left nearly six tons of food to be picked up by letter carriers. The food will be distributed to agencies that help the needy.

The National Association of Letter Carriers' food drive was considered a huge success. In fact, the drive gathered about double what had been estimated before the drive. It was easy for caring postal patrons to participate. All they had to do was leave the food at their mailboxes to be picked up by the letter carriers.

It is difficult, sometimes, to comprehend the need for food and other necessities in a community that is so richly blessed. But there are those who need help, and the canned goods and other nonperishable items will go a long way to fill the gap.

All the jokes about the Postal Service aside, the letter carriers are to be commended for their worthwhile and successful drive.

Another effort to stock the shelves of food pantries for the needy is going on this week at the JCPenney Co. store at West Park Mall. The store will be accepting canned goods and nonperishable food, as well as cash donations, through Wednesday.

Once again, you have an opportunity to show your generosity.
