For a nation whose birth was made possible by a revolutionary war and whose history has seen thousands of lives lost for the sake of liberty and freedom, it is both appropriate and honorable to memorialize those who died in the service of their country.

This has been the aim of a corner of Capaha Park in Cape Girardeau since 1942. The park's Freedom Corner is at the intersection of Broadway and West End Boulevard. Hundreds of motorists pass the corner every day, and many take note of the pillars with the memorial plaques. The spread-winged eagles are another focal point, as is the miniature Statue of Liberty that was presented to the city by the Boy Scouts in 1950.

Over the years, weather and other factors have taken their toll on the various memorials, particularly the brick pillars on which the plaques hang. Now the pillars are in danger of falling down. So they are being replaced.

American Legion Post 63 is spearheading this restoration effort, and the post's members and leadership are to be commended for their efforts to refurbish these memorials that mean so much to the families and friends of those whose named are listed.

The project includes rebuilding the brick columns. Bricklayer Local 23 has volunteered to do this work.

In addition, eagles atop the columns will be restored. And the various plaques will be cleaned.

Overall, the American Legion expects to be able to complete the project for about $5,000. The post is relying on the generosity of those who understand the sacrifices of those who have fought in combat.

Surely this community, with its deep-rooted history of support for causes that express the very best of American ideals, will make sure all of the expenses of restoring Freedom Corner will be met.

Donations may be mailed to American Legion-Freedom Corner, P.O. Box 531, Cape Girardeau, Mo., 63702.

In addition, donations can be made at any of the facilities of the following banks: Boatmen's, First National, Roosevelt, South East and Union Planters.

Any and all donations will be appreciated for this effort. Freedom Park is a constant reminder that the liberties we enjoy have come at a price. And the memory of those who fought and died should never be forgotten.
