FRATERNITIES JOIN NO-ALCOHOL MOVEMENT

Nationwide, more fraternities are embracing the notion of alcohol-free chapters. Two more Southeast Missouri State University fraternities -- Sigma Nu and Phi Delta Theta -- are the latest to join this trend of eliminating alcohol in chapter houses.

It isn't Prohibition. The idea is if you're going to drink, you should drink responsibly. That's a notion that most adults adhere to in society.

A major reason why fraternities are doing this is because of the high cost of liability insurance. Some insurance companies view a nuclear power plant a safer risk than a fraternity.

Fraternities cannot afford to have an "Animal House" atmosphere in these days of lawsuit fever.

The high cost of college education these days also encourages students to become more serious in their studies.

College should prepare students for adulthood. Responsible drinking is just another part of growing up.
