James Harnes Sr., a 17-year mayor of Advance and businessman, died Dec. 2.
The Southeast Missourian Spirit of America recipient in 2007, Harnes' obituary included an impressive list of public service and civic and community involvement. This included: auditor for the Missouri Department of Insurance; mayor of advance from 1992 to 2009; member of Advance First Baptist Church, Gideons and Lakewood Masonic Lodge 489 AF&AM; and board member for the Veterans Home Foundation and Cross Trails Medical Center. For 20 years, he also volunteered with the Missouri Veterans Home, his obituary stated. His service to country included 20 years with the Army, where he retired as a captain.
Chad Kight called his grandfather a hero, a humble man who cared for others and served.
"I really wouldn't believe much in Tom Brokaw's ‘Greatest Generation' if it weren't for my grandfather. ... My grandfather exemplifies it perfectly," Kight told the Southeast Missourian.
We're thankful for local leaders who volunteer their time and practice servant leadership. Based on his legacy of service, this was true of James Harnes Sr.
Harnes will be missed, and we offer our prayers to the Almighty for his family.
