We live in an area that is prone to flash flooding whenever there is a heavy rain, particularly if the rain falls for a long period of time and the ground is already saturated with moisture.
How many times have we seen and heard the admonition to treat floodwater as a menace that can kill?
For a lot of reasons, however, too many of us choose to ignore the destructive power of rushing water.
Even though most of us don't understand the physics of hydraulics, we are all too familiar with those heart-breaking news reports about motorists whose vehicles are swept away by a flash flood that may only be a foot or two deep. Flowing water has a deceptively tremendous force.
Despite the inconvenience of even minor flooding, we would all be safer if we would remember what we've known for so long: Do not attempt to go through the swirling waters of a flash flood.
