Fiscally sound

In an era when fiscal discipline in government is often lacking and the world economy is struggling, it's nice to hear good news from the city of Cape Girardeau.

Cape Girardeau city officials recently announced the city exceeded revenue projections by $700,000 for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

A successful first year for the Cape Splash Family Aquatic Center, higher than projected sales tax income and the air show all contributed to the financial success of the city.

Cape Splash was expected to break even during its first fiscal year. However, the aquatic center generated $200,000. The city projected a half-percent growth in sales tax revenue. Actual numbers revealed a 1.5 percent growth that totaled $84,000 more than was anticipated. The Blue Angels availability for an air show brought in an unexpected $80,000.

Motor fuel savings, hiring decisions and higher fuel sales also contributed to the financial success.

While the city does have some obstacles to address, credit should be given to city leaders for conservatively budgeting projected revenue and controlling spending. Cape Girardeau businesses should also be commended for attracting customers to the city during a difficult economic period.
