U.S. Rep. Bill Emerson has a reputation of being a fighter. Since 1980, he has fought for constituents and issues important to Southeast Missouri.

But Emerson is waging a personal battle as well against lung cancer. The eight-term congressman is gearing up his re-election campaign. Several months of chemotherapy haven't cramped his drive. His only limitation has been on travel during the treatment.

The 58-year-old congressman has missed only five minor House votes out of 188 since his treatment began. Several other congressmen without health problems aren't so conscientious. Emerson's voting attendance record remains among the top 5 percent.

After years of frustrating Democratic control, Emerson is enjoying a House with GOP leadership. And his mail has been flooded with encouragement from thousands of 8th District constituents with personal stories about people who have beaten the disease. He is trying to answer each letter personally.

Emerson is in line to become chairman of the powerful House Agriculture committee. He currently serves as vice chairman, and Chairman Pat Roberts is running for the U.S. Senate in Kansas. Speaker Newt Gingrich has assured Emerson he will become chairman. The Cape Girardeau congressman is also a ranking member of the Public Works and Transportation committee. These are important committees to the 8th District.

Emerson doesn't subscribe to any of the five health care plans available to federal employees. His coverage is through his wife's work, a trade association for property and casualty insurance. He receives no special health-care treatment as a congressman.

He remains upbeat about both his health and the direction of Congress. Emerson is a fighter, and the 8th District can expect no less in his battle with cancer.
