This Sunday the 1st Ever 11th Annual Louis J. Lorimier World Famous Downtown Golf Tournament will be held.

What a name. But also, what a neat event.

The tournament, which is a fundraiser for the Red House Interpretive Center, begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Common Pleas Courthouse.

The nine-hole course takes you through various places downtown, near businesses and down to the riverfront.

The entry fee is $30. That includes nine holes of golf, an all-you-can-eat catfish buffet and Birdie Balls, "which are shaped like napkin rings but perform amazingly like golf balls, except they don't break glass or dent automobiles, which makes them perfect for a tournament played on city streets, sidewalks, waterfronts and railroad tracks," according to columnist Joe Sullivan.

Participants (all ages are welcome) should bring either a five iron or six iron. Special strike pads are provided by the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Foundation to lessen damage to equipment and the playing surfaces.

If you're looking for a reason to get out this weekend and enjoy downtown Cape, and want to support a historic downtown location in the process, here's a great one.
