It's our honor every summer to recognize one deserving individual, among those nominated by you, our readers, as the recipient of the Southeast Missourian Spirit of America Award. And last night before the demolition derby and fireworks at Arena Park, we recognized this year's recipient, David Hitt.
In addition to his service in the armed forces, where he received a Purple Heart in Vietnam, and the numerous volunteer hours he has given to his community, we were especially impressed with the number of lives, of all ages, this man has touched.
When we think about the spirit of America, one word that comes to mind is service. Whether through his time refereeing local sports, volunteering to help animals through Safe Harbor and the Bollinger County Stray Project, his assistance with the VFW and Honor Tour, or his civic involvement with the Jackson Board of Aldermen and many other local organizations, David has maintained a lifetime of service.
In addition to his willingness to serve, David has also been an effective leader. Those nominating him said, "I met Dave when he was the EMAC director for Cape County. He invited me to participate in an emergency drill. Even though he was very busy, he did what Dave does so well. He listened and then worked to make ideas happen."
Congratulations, David, for being selected as this year's Southeast Missourian Spirit of America recipient. And thank you to the many other nominees for their service to community and country.
