It is great to see people working together to better the community. Such was the case last weekend when the House of Prayer Church and St. Vincent de Paul Parish worked to renovate an old house for a new youth center.

The interdenominational effort is uplifting. It serves as a model for other churches and community groups.

Seventy-five youths and adults worked side by side. The house near the intersection of Independence and Sprigg will be transformed into the House of Prayer's Educational Youth Domestic Center.

The plans call for a Junior Achievement program, a homework and literacy center and training classes in spiritual, domestic, conflict resolution and career development.

The church was able to purchase the property with funding from the successful SlamFest basketball tournament, which is held annually in Indian Park. The tournament has raised some $12,000 over the past six years.

This is certainly a good use for those dollars. This new center represents a concrete way to help the community's young people.
