There's a lot going on this weekend. Plenty of events to attend in the area. But one local school will present a musical that should draw good crowds.

Central Junior High School in Cape Girardeau was set to open the first of three performances of "Once Upon a Mattress" Thursday night at the school's auditorium.

The production is the musical version of "The Princess and the Pea." While not one of the more familiar musicals from the school such as "Beauty and the Beast" or "Annie," the comedy is one that should be fun. Mike Dumey, director, said this is one that helped launch actress and comedian Carol Burnett's career.

The music and acting have been great in past years, and the costumes were first class.

With 150 students involved this year, Pat Renard, the costume director, is responsible for coordinating about 175 outfits.

Tickets for remaining performances tonight and Saturday, both at 7 p.m., may be purchased at the door.

Community performances are one aspect that makes this area special. In addition to the junior high, there are other schools that also produce great shows that entertain audiences and give students unforgettable experiences.

We hope you consider your support of these events with your attendance.
