If you ask which American holiday is the most patriotic, the biggest response will be the Fourth of July. If you ask what the highlight of any Independence Day celebration is, the biggest response will be fireworks. Because of budget constraints, many communities have cut back or eliminated big fireworks shows. But a group of veterans is bound and determined to make sure there is a proper celebration of our nation's birthday in Cape Girardeau.
Last year a joint veterans council provided fireworks at Arena Park. This year, the veterans have been organized as USA Veterans, and the group is planning a three-day event at Arena Park from July 2 to 4, ending with a big fireworks display on the night of Fourth of July. There will be games, entertainment and food and drink vendors as well.
To put on such a celebration, USA Veterans estimates the cost will be $60,000. Donations are being sought to offset those expenses. You can contribute on the www.usa-veterans.org website or by calling Commander Rodger Brown at 388-1916.
The Southeast Missourian will be presenting its Spirit of America Award before the fireworks. Organizations are encouraged to make nominations for this award. Nomination forms are available at semissourian.com.
