Cape Girardeau and Jackson have a new goodwill ambassador, and he's perfect for the job. Ten-year-old Evan Henry, who lives in Jackson, was the winner of this year's St. Francis Medical Center Soap Box Derby organized by the Rotary Club of Cape Girardeau. In addition to a trophy almost as tall as he is, Evan will represent the area at the national Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio, in July.

More than 40 youngsters participated in Saturday's derby, the second race held since the event was reorganized after a lapse of several years. For one rain-threatened morning, the Sprigg Street hill in front of Blanchard Elementary School became a racetrack that provided thrills, spills and great fun.

Cape Girardeau and Jackson rightfully can be proud of Evan and all the drivers and volunteers who made the derby possible.
