There was plenty of laughing and good-natured ribbing Sunday as former Plaza Tire Capahas players participated in a reunion game at Capaha Field.
About 30 former players made it to the ballpark, and several still were in good shape and played well. The two teams -- white vs. blue -- were managed by Rick Wieser and Darrick Smith. Umpiring the game was longtime team manager Jess Bolen.
While the fans certainly enjoyed the action -- plus the entertaining commentary from ESPN1220 radio personality Erik Sean, who served as the public address announcer from the dugout -- the night also was about supporting a good cause: St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. A youngster who has received treatment at the hospital threw out the first pitch.
Capahas baseball is a tradition ingrained in Southeast Missouri. Some families have seen several generations play for the team.
Jess and Mary Bolen have played an important role in the team's history, spending countless hours at the ballpark. We're thankful for the Bolens and their contribution to local baseball, including efforts to keep Capaha Field looking nice for the squad and others who use it. For young players, competing on Capaha Field for the first time is a memorable experience.
The 2013 team continues its home schedule this weekend with an 8 p.m. Friday contest and doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Saturday. All three games are against the St. Louis Bulls. On Sunday the Capahas will play a doubleheader in Charleston, Mo.
If you're looking for some competitive baseball to watch this weekend, Capaha Field is a good place to start.
