As the manager of one of Cape Girardeau's largest retailing establishments, it would be easy enough for Harry Rediger to sequester himself in private business concerns and let the community spin on its own path. He chose a different course, and Cape Girardeau is better for it. On Friday, Mr. Rediger received the Chamber of Commerce Rush H. Limbaugh Sr. Award for contributions to the community. It is a fitting honor.
His resume of civic involvement is formidable and runs a prohibitive length. A listing of just recent activities gives you the flavor of his commitment to community betterment.
Mr. Rediger just finished his third stint as general fund chairman of the Area Wide United Way. He is a member of the Cape Girardeau Planning and Zoning Commission and chairman of the board of trustees for the County Mill Tax for Mental Health. He is vice-chairman of the St. Francis Medical Center board, chairman-elect of the Chamber of Commerce board and chairman of the board for the University Foundation's Copper Dome Society. Most recently, he agreed to chair the Finance Task Force for the public school's Project Partnership.
There are many people in the community who are willing to accept tasks of civic improvement. There is still another, more unique, brand of person who will look at community needs and say, "Here is what must be done. Follow me." Harry Rediger is such a person. We are grateful for his leadership. The Limbaugh Award is well-earned.
