Boy Scouts in Southeast Missouri recently went door to door collecting donated canned goods and other items destined for food banks, which are trying to keep up with increased demand.

The Salvation Army is raising money for its many programs with its traditional bell ringers and other fundraising activities.

Contributions are coming in for Toybox and Christmas for the Elderly.

The United Way of Southeast Missouri is continuing its annual fundraising campaign that helps support so many important agencies and community activities.

Fundraisers are being held to assist individuals in meeting the unexpected expenses of serious, often life-threatening, illnesses.

Dozens of other special efforts to raise money and get Christmas gifts for our friends and neighbors in need are working hard to meet their goals.

All of these efforts appreciate the many gifts that already have been made, but they need as much help as they can get in a year of widespread financial uncertainty.

Bad times are when the good works of all these charitable organizations are needed the most. Helping these agencies to meet their goals and provide their services is a good way to participate in this season of giving.

If you have contributed to these efforts: Thank you. Your donation will be used in special ways to make someone's life brighter.

If you are still deciding how to help this year, please be assured that whatever contribution you make will bring comfort and joy to some deserving person.

As we get closer to Christmas, please look into your heart and help however you can.

To all those who remember the reason for the season: Thank you.
