3 honored as 'presidents emeritus' of Southeast
In the 139 years Southeast Missouri State University has operated in Cape Girardeau, 16 men and one woman have served the institution as presidents. For a full list of presidents of the university, go to http://www.semissourian.com/story/1831938.html
Of those educators, only three have been honored with the title "president emeritus" by the Board of Regents: Dr. Washington S. Dearmont in 1938, Dr. Joseph A. Serena in 1944, and Dr. Dale Nitzschke in 2006.
Dearmont served as president from 1899-1921, Serena from 1921-1933, and Nitzschke from 1996-1999.
I was able to find detailed stories regarding Dearmont and Serena when they were honored. However, only a single line in a Dec. 20, 2006, Missourian article referred to Nitzschke's selection: "The regents also conferred an honorary title of president emeritus on Nitzschke, who served as president of the university from 1996 to 1999." After his tenure as president, Nitzschke served as a fund-raising chancellor and lobbyist for the school.
Here are the articles about Dearmont and Serena.
