Financing law enforcement is always a major issue in rural counties. How would you save money for your department?

I consistently come in under budget by monitoring expenditures closely and implement money saving programs.This is a first class county and the Sheriff must have administrative experience. There's a $5.5 million budget, 89 employees, 6 courts, and 225 inmates daily.If you don't understand budgets, finance, employee labor laws, or jail procedures, you will cost the taxpayer. I used County Law Enforcement Restitution Funds (CLERF)to make our deputies the best equipped in Southeast Missouri.

If elected, what improvements would you make in the department?

Crimes change constantly and as they do we change our equipment, training, and technology to combat them.From word processors to mobile data terminals in patrol cars.From crude bullet proof vests to the same vests our soldiers wear in battle.From payphones to smartphones. From field searches to drone searches, the list of changes goes on.Our deputies are the best trained, equipped, and technologically advanced Deputies in the region and I will keep it that way.

Do you feel the sheriff's department has a good reputation? How would you preserve or improve on that reputation?

The Sheriff's Office has a sterling reputation and there is a reason.I'm a builder of bridges and not walls.I always partner with other agencies for multi-jurisdictional task forces like the Major Case Squad and SEMO Drug Task Force.I will preserve and enhance our reputation through training and stay at the forefront of community outreach programs.I run my office based on a simple biblical principle from Micah which is;"Do justly,love mercy, and walk humbly."

What is the biggest crime problem in Cape Girardeau County?

Most crimes have ties to drugs and alcohol. We're a founding member of the SEMO Drug Task Force and also have an officer assigned to the local DEA Office Drug Task Force.We are a member of the multi-jurisdictional DWI task force.Utilizing School resource officers to interact with children and participating in multi-jurisdictional task forces are the best way to fight this problem.Anyone who says we don't get along with others is being flat out disingenuous.

Closing remarks

As Sheriff I run a tight ship.I defend the 2nd amendment and right to carry with all my being.I built the justice center without a tax increase, paid it off, and now I'm paying for the Juvenile Center in Cape. I've put back $1.3 million in rainy day Prop 1 funds.There hasn't been a jail suicide or a successful inmate or employee lawsuit against the county under my watch. I'm asking for your vote.
