Survivor stories: Ellen Henderson-Bigham

Ellen Bingham

Age diagnosed: 43

How long did you battle breast cancer? I was diagnosed July 13, 2011 and have been in remission since April 2012.

What was the hardest part? Some women would say the hardest part was the treatments or the surgeries. For me the hardest part was knowing there was the possibility of my not surviving to be here for my children and my husband. We had already faced disaster when we lost our home in the major flood in May 2011. In the midst of trying to rebuild our home and our lives, I got diagnosed with late Stage III-C breast cancer. I went through a double mastectomy, lymphectomy, chemotherapy, radiation treatments and multiple reconstructive surgeries. And now, I celebrate remission and thank God for his many blessings, the support of my family and many friends and ask Him to continue to bless me long enough to see my children raised and leading successful, happy lives.

What advice would you give to other women? Definitely have annual mammograms and to not ever hesitate to get a second opinion. If the little voice inside you tells you that something's not right, listen to it! If a biopsy is not suggested, demand one! It's your body and your life at stake!
