HDSA Announces 2011 Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk

Walkers at the 2010 Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk hosted by Heartland Down Syndrome Association

The Heartland Down Syndrome Association will host its Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday October 15, at Cape County Park North. This year's walk, the group's third annual awareness walk, will include a one-mile walk, music and dancing, entertainment, carnival games and more.

In 2009, HDSA hosted the area's first-ever Buddy Walk, and 85 people participated. In 2010, the name changed to the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk, and 135 walkers participated. The group hopes to make this year's event even bigger and better.

Advocates for individuals with Down syndrome work every day to spread the word about the many talents and gifts of children and adults with Down syndrome, which is a relatively common chromosomal abnormality affecting one in 733 chilren born. October is a time to recognize in a special way that children and adults with Down syndrome are MORE ALIKE THAN DIFFERENT from others, and to celebrate their many abilities, achievements, and contributions.

All individuals of any age with Down syndrome, and their families and friends, are invited to attend this year's Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk. The walk is an awareness event and not a fund-raiser, so there is no registration fee to pay and no pledges to get. However, REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Those in need of more information, or wishing to register, may call (573) 334-5685 or send an email to heartlanddsa@msn.com.
