Independence & West End snow 1960's

Posted Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at 12:00 AM

Frony snapped this snow scene looking east on Independence at West End Boulevard in the early 1960s. A city directory lists Williams Shell Service there.

Kimbel Truck Lines had a trailer painting and repair shop at the southeast corner of Independence and West End Blvd. “Kimbel” is visible on a building beyond the Shell gasoline price sign.

  • Fred:

Thanks for another great Frony photo from the past. Gas for 23.9 cents/gal.!!!

A Google Earth image of this intersection(at street level) dated 7/2012 shows gas at $3.19/gal at the Rhodes 101. Also, it appears that the house on the northeast corner is the only building that has remained unchanged.

I suspect that Frony's photo was taken in the last part of 1962 or later. The rear fender of the car in the right edge of the photo is that of a 1963 Oldsmobile.

    Again, thanks for your work!
