Mineral Area College has joined forces with the Cape Girardeau Area Vocational-Technical School to beef up training for local industries.

The partnership offers a new associate of applied science degree with classes offered at the Cape Girardeau Area Vocational-Technical School. This cooperative venture should benefit both students and area employers.

About five years ago, a group of 13 area industries worked with the vocational school to fashion mechanical, electrical and electronics training. Students completing the training earned a certificate. Beginning this semester, those students can take the training a step higher and earn a two-year degree in industrial maintenance.

This new cooperative agreement adds general education courses to the offering so students can earn the associate's degree. It is also open to the public.

Southeast Missouri State University is working closely with the new program. That association benefits students because all credits can directly transfer to Southeast.

This community college offering provides a convenient, low-cost alternative for area employees. These cooperative ventures not only build enrollments, but benefit the region with more higher education choices.
