At 7 p.m. Tuesday, a meeting important to all in Southern Missouri will be held at the high school in Van Buren. A group of economic developers, civic and government leaders and highway promoters all along the U.S. 60 highway corridor will meet to highlight the importance of completing improvements to this vital artery. Keynote speaker will be U.S. Rep. Jo Ann Emerson, R-Cape Girardeau.
State and federal highway officials have long since committed to the improvement of U.S. 60 to a four-lane, limited access thoroughfare. With next week's planned announcement by the Total Transportation Commission of the results of its investigations, U.S. 60 promoters felt the time is right to re-emphasize the commitments made earlier by responsible government officials. They are right.
Following through on these commitments will enhance safety and is vital to economic development and tourism efforts throughout Southern Missouri. Here's wishing these folks well with their meeting this week.
