Seventy girls are participating in a new-ish program at Cape Girardeau Central Middle School called Tiger Lilies.
As reported by Marybeth Niederkorn, the Tiger Lilies meet weekly in groups of about 15, and they work on team building, social-skills training and soft skills. They had a lesson on table manners and etiquette, for example.
The Tiger Lilies is the female version of the Honorable Young Mens Club, which is aimed at fostering healthy habits and attitudes in at-risk boys. Many, but not all, of the girls in the Tiger Lilies group also are considered at-risk. Most of those involved in the Tiger Lilies group have seen improvements in discipline referral and attendance analytics.
Were encouraged by the efforts being made in schools to roll up sleeves and work with children on a social level, helping them to understand soft skills and how to manage in certain social situations. It looks to be having a positive impact already.
Thanks to all involved with this program. You are making a meaningful, positive contribution.
